This heroic nine-year-old schoolboy saved his two baby nieces and his mother from the family's burning wooden home seconds before a gas canister exploded.

Little Pavel Ivanov had to be hospitalised after plunging into the smoke-filled house, twice, to rescue his loved ones just before the explosion reduced the home to a blackened shell.

The fire, in the village of Baidullino in central Russia's Ulyanovsk Oblast region, was allegedly caused by children playing with matches.

When Pavel returned home, he found a huge blaze around the doorway and immediately dived into the burning building.

He grabbed his one-year-old niece Alice and her sister Violetta (2) and carried them outside to safety where he left them with neighbours.

And then, as onlookers called firefighters stationed 10km away, he ran back inside the fiery home for the second time.

He woke up his mother, Svetlana Samarkina, who had been taking a nap and hadn’t realised her home was ablaze.

She later said, “I ran out when Pavel woke me up, I looked back through the window and everything was on fire.”

Pavel said that by then the house was filled with smoke and it was almost impossible to breathe.

"I saw fire and rushed inside, I didn’t feel scared, well maybe I got a little bit scared,” Pavel said.

"I thought I could put out the fire but I couldn't so I grabbed the little ones and rushed outside with them."

Pavel, who one day hopes to become a fireman, will receive a bravery award when doctors declare him well enough to leave hospital.

He wasn’t seriously injured but he inhaled a lot of smoke and doctors wanted to monitor him for a week.
