Brussels - One person has been placed under arrest in Belgium for having played a role in the Paris terrorist attacks and having participated in the activities of a terrorist group, prosecutors say in a statement.

The person, which they did not identify, was part of 16 people who were detained on Sunday evening as part of a police sweep in the Belgian capital Brussels and the southern city of Charleroi. The 15 other individuals have been released after questioning.

"It is not uncommon, during large-scale search operations like the one last night, to bring in several people merely for thorough questioning or to clarify why they were found on the searched premises," the statement says.

Another five people were taken into custody on Monday morning during police searches in the regions of Brussels and the eastern city of Liege. Two of them have been released, while a magistrate will decide on Tuesday whether the other three should remain under detention.

Meanwhile, the terrorism threat level for Brussels is being maintained at the maximum level of 4, which indicates a "serious and immediate" threat.

However, Prime Minister Charles Michel said on Monday evening that schools and the subway in the city will progressively reopen starting on Wednesday.

The threat level for the rest of Belgium remains at 3, which means there is a "possible and likely" risk.
