London - New Prime Minister Theresa May pledged to forge a "bold, new, positive" role for Britain outside the EU, as she took office on Wednesday.

"Following the referendum, we face a time of great national change and I know because we are Great Britain, we will rise to the challenge," she said outside the premier's Downing Street office, referring to the June 23 vote to quit the EU.

"I know because we're Great Britain that we will rise to the challenge," she told reporters, flanked by her husband, Philip.

"And we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for everyone of us."
