An officer in Southeast Texas shot and killed a 19-year-old man who was fleeing police after an attempted traffic stop early on Monday, authorities said.

A statement from the Galveston County Sheriff's Office said Luis Fernendo Argueta died after a Galveston police officer opened fired early on Monday.

The lead up to the gunfire began when Galveston officers saw a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a convenience store and tried to make a traffic stop, according to the statement. Authorities said Argueta drove away from officers and then fled on foot into a vacant lot after stopping the vehicle.

County Sheriff Henry Trochesset, in an interview on Tuesday, said the teenager was fatally shot while fleeing authorities. His office said a Galveston officer fired two rounds after giving "verbal commands" to the fleeing teen. The teenager was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

It was unclear on Tuesday if Argueta was armed when he was shot and Trochesset said he did not want to speculate on why the officer opened fire. The sheriff reported that authorities found a pistol outside of the vehicle.

The Houston Chronicle has reported that Argueta's girlfriend said he left his gun behind when he ran out of the vehicle.

Argueta's girlfriend, who was with him when police showed up in the parking lot, told the newspaper Argueta tried to shake the police and said he was worried because he had a gun on him. She reported that two officers came from a vehicle and ordered Argueta to stop before one officer opened fire.

Captain Joshua Schirard, a spokesperson for the Galveston Police Department, said two officers are on administrative leave following the shooting, but only one fired.

The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting, and Schirard said it is department policy to have an outside agency investigate officer-involved shootings.

Investigators are trying to determine if there is video of the shooting.
