A woman who opened her suitcase after flying home to Scotland from Australia was shocked to discover a snake hiding inside one of her shoes.

Moira Boxall realised the python had made the 15 000km journey from Queensland to Glasgow with her when she found it curled up in a slip-on sandal.

Paul Airlie, Moira’s son-in-law who lives in Queensland, said she had initially assumed it was a toy snake put there as a prank until she prodded the serpent and it moved.

Moira had been visiting her daughter, Sarah, and her son-in-law in Australia and had even told them she was worried about snakes in the area.

The Scotswoman thought she had spotted one in her room just a few days before she left but couldn’t track it down.

It seems the sneaky little creature had hidden in her shoe!

After discovering the snake inside her luggage, Moira put it in a box, took it out to her garden and phoned her family in Queensland.

“She wasn’t at all expecting to find the snake when she was unpacking her bag,” Paul said.

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Taylor Johnstone confirmed that they removed the snake from Moira’s property.

“Upon examination, the snake was found to be a spotted python which isn’t venomous.

“The snake is now in quarantine at our animal rescue and rehoming centre in Edinburgh.”
