Jakarta - A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Molucca islands on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, an official said.

The quake occurred at 06:21 in the Banda Sea, about 160km south-east of Ambon, the main city in the eastern province of Maluku, Indonesia's geophysics agency said.

There was no tsunami threat, it said.

"People panicked and ran out of their homes," said Sutopo Nugroo, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency.
