Synagogue suspect appears in US court in wheelchair

Robert Bowers, the suspect charged with hate crimes and killing 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue, appeared in court on Monday for the first time, pushed in a wheelchair.

Bowers, pasty faced and balding, made little comment during the three-minute hearing other than to respond "Yes" and "Yes Sir" in response to procedural questions from a federal judge.

He was dressed in a blue sweatshirt. He was taken into custody on Saturday after being injured in a shootout with police.
