An Uber driver from New York has been arrested after he’d allegedly allowed teen boys to car-surf on the roof of his vehicle. One of the boys fell off and died from his injuries hours later.

The driver, Danyal Cheema (24), was charged with manslaughter on 6 November.

On the night of 23 September, Cheema picked up three teen boys who’d allegedly been out partying and drinking in Cold Spring Harbor in Long Island, said Suffolk County district attorney Tim Sini, People reports.

As Danyal was driving the boys allegedly offered him $70m (R994) to let them “surf” on top of the Uber vehicle. They eventually bargained the price down to $40 (R568), NBC reports.

Ryan Mullen (15) and another boy got on the roof while the third teen took a video of the action for Snapchat.

Ryan fell off the car and hit his head on the pavement, Bristol Herald Courier reports.

The driver went on to drop the teens off at their destination, a house in Huntington. Ryan succumbed to his head injuries and died in his sleep later that evening, the prosecutor noted.

“Words cannot describe how deeply troubled we are by this incident,” an Uber spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with the rider’s family during this difficult time. This driver has been permanently removed from the app,” the spokesperson added.
