Security alert as car explodes in Berlin

2016-03-15 12:48

Berlin - Police in Berlin say a man has been killed after his car exploded while he was driving.

City police spokesperson Jens Berger told The Associated Press that the explosion occurred early on Tuesday in the western district of Charlottenburg.

Berger was unable to immediately provide further details, saying investigators were still examining the scene.

A picture posted by Berlin police on Twitter showed the wreckage of a silver station wagon on the street, its windows blown out and its front end smashed in.

Police said they suspected a bomb caused the explosion that killed the man who was driving through the German capital.

The deputy chief spokesman for Berlin police, Carsten Mueller, told The Associated Press that the explosion occurred at about 08:00 in the western district of Charlottenburg.

Mueller says that "investigators are working on the assumption that it was an explosive device" inside or on the vehicle that caused the blast.

He said investigators were still trying to determine the man's identity and couldn't immediately provide details about the vehicle.
