A 2-year-old girl has died after becoming locked out of her house during a snowstorm.

Sofia Van Schoick from Newport in the US state of Rhode Island was found in the backyard by her neighbour Shane Rowe and his girlfriend, 9 News reports.

"I said to myself, 'I hope that's a doll,'" Shane told local media.

The little girl was reportedly dressed in pyjamas and was steps away from the door.

"My girlfriend came out and she ran out and went over and saw she was actually a child.

"She banged on the door to alert the parents," he said.

Shane said the young girl's mother grabbed her child, covered her in blankets and called emergency services, WMUR9 reports.

"Newport emergency personnel responded and found she wasn't responsive and was found to be deceased," said Newport police chief James Burroughs.

Sophia seems to have wandered outside and was unable to get back inside.

The girl's grandfather, Lindsay, said the 2-year-old, her pregnant mother and twin brother, Camden, had moved to Newport a few days ago.

"She was a very precocious two-and-a-half-year-old girl, way ahead of her time," Lindsay said.

Sophia's aunt Kait Verkest says the devastated mom is blaming herself, Mirror News reports.

"My dad called me. I answered the phone and told him I'd call him back. And he said, 'You need to take this call, Sofia is dead,'" Kait said.

"I'm hoping she (Sofia's mom) finds strength and sees herself as a valuable person and continues to be a mom to Camden."

The Newport police department is investigating the incident.
