Bangkok - At least 12 people including Chinese tourists were killed on Sunday when a bus plunged off a road in Thailand, while in Mexico at least 15 people died in a crash also involving a bus with tourists.

Investigators in Thailand said the accident happened shortly after midday in Doi Saket district 30km from the northern city of Chiang Mai.

"Initial reports show there are 14 people injured and 12 people have died," an officer at Doi Saket police station told AFP, asking not to be named.

"It's not only Chinese but also Thai," he replied, when asked to confirm local media reports that those on board the bus were Chinese tourists.

Multiple images posted online by local news outlets showed a horrific scene as rescuers battled to reach those trapped inside the smashed bus, which had come to rest in thick foliage with its roof caved in.

Some of those still inside had suffered horrific injuries. In one picture seven pieces of white sheeting had been draped to cover either bodies or body parts.

Meanwhile, in Mexico it was reported that at least 15 people were killed in an accident involving a tourist bus and a passenger van.

More than 30 others were injured in the crash, which occurred in the state of Oaxaca, according to police and first responders.

The accident happened around 20:00 (02:00 GMT Sunday) in the village of Los Limones on a road that runs close to the Pacific coast, they said.

"We have a report that at least 15 people were killed and many more have been taken to hospital," local police official Faustino Lopez Rios told reporters.

The Mexican Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 people had been hurt.
