The football world has pulled together to send well wishes to former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who underwent emergency surgery following a brain haemorrhage.

His former club confirmed the news on Saturday, saying the surgery “had gone very well" adding Sir Alex "needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery".

The club further stated the Ferguson family has requested privacy as Fergie recovers in Salford Royal Hospital.

The 76-year-old retired as United manager in May 2013 after winning 38 trophies during 26 years in charge.

Sir Alex is the most successful manager in the history of English football, after claiming trophies that included 13 English Premier League titles, two Uefa Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

He led the Red Devils to the treble – Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League – in 1999, an achievement that earned him a knighthood.

Former United players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham, wished Fergie aka Boss a speedy recovery, along with former managerial rival Carlo Ancelotti.
