Green Bay — In an effort to repair some of the damage he had inflicted on his presidential campaign, Donald Trump has endorsed House Speaker Paul Ryan.

The endorsement ends a four-day standoff that had exposed the deep chasms in the Republican Party over his candidacy.

Trump struck a rare conciliatory tone at a Wisconsin rally on Friday night, imploring his party to unite behind him. It was an unusual gesture for Trump, who is known for his refusal to admit mistakes and his tendency to double down when he's under attack.

In addition to praising Ryan, Trump also threw his support behind two other Republicans who have criticised him at times: Arizona Senator John McCain and New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte.
