Twin infants died on Friday after their father accidentally left them inside a hot car in New York City all day.

Juan Rodriguez (39), the twins’ father, didn’t realise he’d left the 11-month-old boy and girl inside the car for eight hours while he was at work, Buzzfeed News reports.

A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department said the incident was reported just after 4pm in the Bronx, New York.

After finishing his work day, Juan started driving home from work. It took him two blocks before he realised his children were still in the backseat. He immediately called 911 but it was too late.

“I assumed I’d dropped them off at day-care before I went to work,” Juan told officers when they arrived.

“I blanked out. My babies are dead; I killed my babies,” the distraught father said.

Juan was taken into custody as authorities investigate the incident. He’s been charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of criminally negligent homicide, People reports.

At a court hearing on Saturday, Juan, who also has three other children, wept uncontrollably as he pleaded not guilty.

Joey Jackson, Juan’s attorney, stated in court that his client hadn’t intentionally harmed the twins.

“What do you do to the guy? Throw him in jail and take him from his family and remaining children again? What’s an appropriate resolution for this type of case?” Joey told CNN.

Police have identified the babies as Phoenix and Luna Rodriguez.

Juan’s wife, Marissa, released a statement saying the family is “completely devastated.”

"This is my absolute worst nightmare. Everything I do reminds me of my sweet, intelligent, beautiful babies and I am still in disbelief," she said.

"Though I am hurting more than I ever imagined possible, I still love my husband. He is a good person and great father and I know he would've never done anything to hurt our children intentionally.

“I will never get over this loss and I know he will never forgive himself for this mistake."
