Ukraine's general staff said on Tuesday that two pilots died when a Sukhoi fighter jet crashed during military exercises with the United States and other NATO countries.

"A Sukhoi-27 plane crashed at around 17:00 local time (1400 GMT) during a training flight," the general staff said on its Facebook page, adding that "the bodies of the two pilots have been found".

The circumstances of the crash are being investigated, the statement said.

Ukraine on October 8 began a series of large-scale air force exercises called Clear Sky 2018 with the United States and other NATO countries.

The exercises run until Friday, with US fighter and transport planes training with about 30 Ukrainian aircraft.

The general staff said the crash occurred between the towns of Khmilnyk and Berdychiv.
