WATCH: UK's Theresa May tells Conservatives she will quit once Brexit delivered but doesn't set date

2019-03-27 19:54

UK lawmaker says Prime Minister Theresa May tells Conservatives she will quit once Brexit delivered but doesn't set date, AP reported.

Her move, announced at a gathering of the Tories' 1922 committee, is a last-gasp attempt to persuade her own party to back her EU withdrawal agreement, which has already been twice heavily defeated in the House of Commons, Sky News reported.

May has told MPs: "I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to secure a smooth and orderly Brexit".

One MP leaving the meeting told The Guardian it fired the starting gun on a Tory leadership contest that would be likely to take place over the summer, with a new leader potentially in place for the Conservative conference in the autumn.
