Circleville - Supporters of after-school programmes in the American state of Ohio say the study helps in social skill-building, and supervision they provide is at stake if US President Donald Trump's administration cuts the main federal funding for such programmes. 

Trump proposes eliminating the $1.2bn 21st Century Community Learning Centres, which provide child care, academic support and enrichment activities for an estimated 1.6 million kids.

Programmes in Circleville, for instance, help more than 160 pupils from the city and surrounding rural areas, many struggling academically.

Trump's budget director has suggested there's no evidence such programmes improve pupils' performance in school, but school officials in Circleville say that's not their experience.

They cited individual stories of student improvement and the superintendent credits after-school programme with helping to boost the district's graduation rate significantly over the past decade.
