WATCH: 63-year-old teacher arrested for hitting student

Beaumont – A high school teacher in Texas was arrested after a video of her repeatedly hitting a student surfaced on social media.

Mary Hastings, a 63-year-old teacher at Ozen High School in Beaumont, was filmed slapping a boy’s head multiple times, calling him an “idiot ass” and mimicking him. She was arrested after the mobile video of the incident emerged on Twitter.

The Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) said in a statement that Hastings was removed from the classroom and placed on paid administrative leave.

“BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct,” said the school district.

According to an Ozen High School student, some students and staff members were upset when they watched the video.

“They were saying that’s not like her. They were upset that she had done it. It was hurtful,” said the student, who wanted to remain anonymous.

Hastings was taken to Jefferson County Jail and was released on a $2 500 bond.
