An eight-year-old boy has been labelled a hero for helping his sister escape from the backseat of a stolen car, WSBTV reports.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon as their great grandmother, Nita Coburn (69), was taking her daughter to the emergency room at Atrium Medical Centre in Middletown, Ohio.

The siblings, Chance Blue and Skylar Weaver, stayed in the car while she headed towards the facility when a man – who the police have since arrested – jumped into the driver’s seat and took off with the children still in the back.

“He kept saying, ‘Get out, get out’,” Chance later said at a press conference.

Chance opened the door to escape with Skylar, who was about to jump out when the hijacker grabbed her by the hoodie. Chance pulled her away from the man and they both tumbled out of the moving car.

“This little guy is a hero, no question,” Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said. “He pulled his sister out of the car with no concern for his own safety.”

Nita was alerted to the chaos outside when she heard screaming and immediately ran to the car. She chased the vehicle, opening the driver’s side door to regain control of the car. But the hijacker slammed the door shut again and locked the door while Coburn hung onto the car, thinking the children were still inside.

The car dragged Nita until the driver sped up, forcing her to let go.

The hijacker has since been charged with two counts of kidnapping, felony assault and grand theft.
