About 20 people were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at a metro station in Rome, sending them hurtling into each other at a terrifying speed.

Local media reports suggest that the escalator malfunctioned after Russian soccer fans were seen singing and jumping on it, causing it to give way.

The incident took place at an underground station, according to Daily Mail. The station was crowded with Moscow fans as they headed to the Stadio Olimpico for the Russian team’s Champions League match against Roma.

The dramatic footage, which was posted by a Russian fan on Twitter, shows the escalator running at incredible speed, causing people to pile up and crash into one another at the bottom.

Most of the injured were Russian although some Italians were hurt too, according to The Telegraph.

One person was seriously injured in the incident – his foot partially severed – and seven others were seriously hurt.

Some soccer fans were reportedly trapped between the metal plates of the steps.

"There was a loud noise while everything went down," one witness told the Independent.

"There was no time to get to safety."
