WATCH: Is this the most racist advert ever?

2016-05-27 10:14

A commercial for a Chinese detergent brand called Qiaobi is doing the rounds for all the wrong reasons.

The advert, which was uploaded onto YouTube on Wednesday, has been called "jaw-droppingly racist" and "the most racist ad of 2016", and it's not hard to see why.

The commercial for the detergent brand begins with a woman loading her washing machine, when a black man in paint-splattered clothes appears.

The woman calls him to her washing machine, puts detergent in his mouth and shoves him into the machine for a thorough rinsing. After the wash is done, a clean Chinese man emerges from the machine.

According to the Shanghiist, traditional beauty standards in China value white skin.

Many Chinese people have a well-established phobia of dark skin which also breeds racist attitudes towards people of colour, who are viewed by some as "dirty" simply because of their skin tone, the website explains.

Shanghiist says the advert reflects widespread attitudes in China: "As any foreigner who has ever lived in China can attest, attitudes regarding race and skin colour are often quite different here from back home. Still even with prior experience, sometimes this country can leave you completely and utterly dumbfounded."

So, what do you think?
