WATCH: NASA's billion-dollar Mars mission nears risky landing

NASA scientists are counting down the days, hours, and minutes before a risky Mars landing that could result in new data about the core of the red planet - or mean a quick and fiery end to a multi-year, billion-dollar project.

The mission revolves around a robot landing craft that will take six minutes to descend through Mars's atmosphere.

Once it lands it will deploy two tools aimed at penetrating the planet's surface and sending data about what lies beneath, including a seismometer to measure "Marsquakes".
