WATCH: Polar vortex freezes US Midwest with dangerously cold air

A blast of Arctic air from the polar vortex brought dangerous, bone-chilling cold to a wide swath of the United States, stretching from the Dakotas to Maine, with snow expected as far south as Alabama and Georgia. 

Chicago is preparing for temps as low as 27 below zero with wind chill values as low as 55 below.

Lincoln Park Zoo is closing down for two days and the rail service Metra is using gas powered heaters to keep switches from freezing.

Railway tracks in Chicago have now been set on fire by to keep the trains moving.
