Her dying wish was for her husband to continue watering her beloved plants – which he religiously did day after day.

But four years down the line Nigel Fitton made a hilarious discovery: his wife Phedre had pranked him into watering plastic plants!

The couple’s daughter, Antonia Nicol, shared on Twitter how her father found he’d been tricked all along.

“Before my mum passed away, she gave my dad strict instructions to water the plants in the bathroom,” she wrote.

“He's been religiously watering them and keeping them alive. They look so amazing he decided to take them to his new home, only to discover they’re plastic!”

Antonia, who’s a firefighter in London, described her mother as “very funny” and with a “cheeky sense of humour” in a separate tweet.

Sadly, 69-year-old Phedre died in 2013, after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer, WSMV reports.

Shortly before her death she asked her husband to keep watering the plants in the bathroom of their Johannesburg home.

Only during his move into a retirement home did Nigel discover the plants were, in fact, fake.

“It was only when we flew over to help him move that we all realised the plants were plastic,” Antonia told Huffington Post.

“He said, ‘I wondered why they still looked so good.’

“We really laughed about it and it was lovely to think that my mum was still there with us.”

What surprised her most about her father’s hilarious story was people’s reaction to it.

“When I tweeted it, I thought about 10 people would look at it,” she says.

Her tweet racked up close to 40 000 retweets and more than 130 000 ‘likes’.

 What a legacy!
