A Chinese woman injected a fruit smoothie into her veins in the hope it would make her healthier. Instead, she almost killed herself.

The woman, whom Chinese authorities identified only as Zeng (51), from Chenzhou China, blended a mixture of 20 different fruits and put it in an intravenous drip on 22 February, Mirror reports.

"I had thought fresh fruits were very nutritious and it would not do me harm by injecting them into my body," Zeng said.

"I had no idea it would get me into such trouble."

She started itching and developed a fever but did nothing about it until her husband, whose name hasn’t been released, noticed his wife’s discomfort, Southern China Post reports.

Zeng was rushed to the hospital, where she was admitted to intensive care.

Doctor Liu Jianxiu told local media that the woman had developed an infection in her liver, kidney and heart and was at risk of multiple organ failure, Lad Bible reports.

Luckily, doctors were able to cleanse her blood using dialysis and treated her with antibiotics.

Zeng’s condition improved after five days and she was moved to the kidney unit, where she’s expected to make a full recovery.
