Music fans the world over were left in a state of shock on Monday  following the news that iconic British singer David Bowie had passed away.

The star died on Sunday  following an 18-month battle with cancer, and just two days after he marked his 69th birthday with the release of his final album Blackstar.

The star released his first record, David Bowie, in 1967 and he's renowned for kicking off the glam rock movement with his Ziggy Stardust persona during the '70s.

Bowie's final album, Blackstar, was designed to be a farewell to his fans, his producer Tony Visconti, has confirmed. The track Lazarus was released on 17 December 2015 and begins with the lyrics: "Look up here, I'm in Heaven!" The accompanying video sees the musician in a hospital bed, and at the end he's seen walking into blackness.

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way," Visconti wrote on Facebook. "His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us."
