The biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom opened in cinemas around the country yesterday. We put together a list of why we love the movie’s leading man, Idris Elba, who plays the role of our beloved Tata.

  1. His British accent. We fell in love with it when he starred in the movie RocknRolla alongside Gerard Butler. Idris grew up in London.
  2. He’s tall, dark and handsome. I’m pretty sure any woman would feel safe in those muscular arms.
  3. He looks really really good in a suit. You can call him Bond, Idris Bond. We need to get that James Bond campaign going, right?
  4. He is a man of many talents. Idris is a DJ, DJ Big Driis and a hip-hop soul musician. You can hear his music on Soundcloud under the name “7WALLACE”.
  5. We think he’ll be a great dad. He plays the ideal father in Tyler Perry's movie, Daddy’s Little Girls. Idris plays a hard-working mechanic who has three daughters and does all he can to provide for and protect his little girls.
  6. He says a few sentences in IsiXhosa in the Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom movie. He gets an A for effort. *Slow clap*
  7. He is a good actor. In 2012 he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his role in the crime drama TV series, Luther.
  8. He is a music video director. Who knew? Idris directed and starred in Mumford & Sons' "Lover of the Light" video.
  9. He has a great sense of humour. His acting tip: "Make your eyes smaller, it makes you look cooler – especially when walking away from explosions,” he told BBC Radio 1.
  10. He enjoyed being in SA so much so he would like to get a South African passport. Can someone please make this happen?
