Here’s why you should grab your running shoes and head for Paarl on Saturday.

25 years ago, Nelson Mandela was released from Vector Verster Prison (currently the Drakenstein Correction Centre) on the R301 outside Paarl. In honour of the late SA icon’s life, the Drakenstein Correction Centre, in collaboration with the Drakenstein Municipality and Cape Winelands District Municipality, will host the sixth annual 27 for Freedom Run/Walk on Saturday February 7.

Here are ten reasons why you should grab your running shoes and head for Paarl.

1) You will get to walk or run in the footsteps of Madiba.

You will get to take part in, or witness the main race which is 27 km and symbolic of the time Nelson Mandela spent in prison.

2) You will be helping sustain Madiba’s legacy.

You will be playing your role in sustaining Madiba’s legacy. Take part in the celebration and nation-building of this historic cultural experience.

3) You don’t have to leave your kids at home.

27 for Freedom is a great opportunity for the whole family. There are a number of raced for both the young and the old, including a 50m Toddlers dash. Also, there will be a ‘kidz corner’ supervised by volunteers from the University of Stellenbosch’s Operation Hope programme.

While the winners of the main race will receive a coveted medal, cash price and the new floating trophy, you will be guaranteed of a bigger reward- tracing the footsteps of one of our country’s icons.
