A game of Russian roulette ended in tragedy when a 17-year-old boy from South Carolina fatally shot himself in the head on Monday, according to police.

To play the dangerous game, you put one bullet in a revolver, spin the cylinder, hold the gun to your head and pull the trigger.

Police say the boy pulled out a .38-calibre revolver and said he was going to play Russian roulette in his room at about midnight. His two cousins pleaded with him not to do it but he held the gun to his head and fired a single shot, according to police spokesperson Juanita Navarro-Suarez.

The boy was declared dead at a hospital. His death was found to be an accident.

Family members who were in the apartment at the time of the shooting told police they didn't know the boy had a gun.

Police are investigating to find out how he got hold of the gun and who owns it.
