The 23-year-old British pop-soul sensation is performing in South Africa for the first time! Catch him in Cape Town on 23 April and in Jozi on 24 April.

The four-time Brit Awards nominee writes and produces all his own music. His track Love Me Again was a No 1 hit in the UK and the video has had more than 100 million views on YouTube.

John grew up poor in a council house in Settle, a small market town in North Yorkshire, England. He was six when his father, an alcoholic, left the family. “Me, my mom [Jackie] and brother [James, now 28] were left with a pound a day. It was bad,” he says. “We were really skint but we’re a tight-knit family who cared for one another.”

He studied to become a mechanic after school. “But I spent the first half of my mechanics course being creative and drawing cars, and by the second half of the year I’d decided to study music.”

He was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour in 2012. It was extracted through his nose. “Thank God it’s over. Ever since that day I’ve never stopped working because my job makes me happy, and with all the success I have I’m a happy, happy man.”
