She calls it bittersweet; he calls it God’s way of saying sorry for taking her beloved firstborn - a blessing to heal the heartache that tore through South Africa’s most famous family after tragedy.

For Zoleka SeakamelaMadiba’s granddaughter, and Sekoati Tsubane, 7de Laan’s Kabelo, the pregnancy is the cherry on top of a romance that flourished from friendship.

Sekoati (30) helped Zoleka (30) to come to terms with the loss of her daughter, Zenani, who died in a car crash while returning from the World Cup Kick-Off Concert at Orlando Stadium, Soweto, last year.

A devastated Zoleka turned to a close friend for comfort - and after a while their relationship developed into something more.

“I was hiding in my pain, blocking it away, and it wasn’t healthy,” she says now. “But Sekoati helped me through it and now I have something positive to look forward to: my relationship with him and a new baby.”

But there are times she feels consumed by guilt. It feels wrong to be happy, she says, because Zenani is no longer here. “It’s sad that we’re celebrating new life when she’s gone.”

Sekoati is overjoyed at the thought of becoming a father again. While he has a four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son from a previous relationship, he says he’s ready for a new baby.

Zoleka is a businesswoman in partnership with an uncle in a helicopter operation. She also has a son,Zwelami (8) who has bonded very well with Sekoati.

The Mandela family is said to be overjoyed at the prospect of the new life. Zoleka’s mother, Zindzi Mandela, has been giving her plenty of advice. Her grandmother, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, dishes out words of wisdom too.

The next step for them is marriage, she says. “In my culture when you have a baby out of wedlock the man has to pay damages. But Sekoati says he won’t pay damages because he’s going to tell the family he wants to marry me.” But that will happen only after they welcome the baby into the world in September.
