Arnold Vosloo still misses South Africa

Arnold Vosloo has slipped quietly into the country to spend three weeks with his family – the longest he’s been here since moving to America, he says. “I’ve just spent four days with my mother and sister in Port Elizabeth.”

The 49-year-old actor has come a long way since the ’80s when he appeared in Afrikaans movies such as Boetie Gaan Border toe (“Boetie goes to the border”).

He’s lived in Santa Monica in California for 22 years and has achieved more international film success than any other local male actor.

But here in his sister Nadia’s lounge he doesn’t act in the least like a glamorous Hollywood star.

His Afrikaans still sounds like the real thing, even though he resorts to the occasional nasal English expression.

YOU’s Danél Blaauw chatted to Arnold about life in Hollywood, how hard he had to work to get his big break and his dream of making a film about the Boer War in Afrikaans. Read more in YOU 22 December 2011.
