Basetsana Kumalo is undergoing surgery after she fell and broke her ankle yesterday.

The timing couldn't be worse for poor Bassie, who was set to appear as a judge at the Miss South Africa finals in Joburg on Saturday.

The businesswoman and former Miss SA "had an unfortunate accident yesterday at her son’s school after watching him play at a concert," organisers said in a statement.

"She slipped in the rain and broke her ankle and is currently in hospital undergoing surgery."

According to the Sun International PR Manager Claudia Henkel, pageant organisers have decided not to replace her on the judging panel and her pre-pageant scores will remain.

“She has already made an enormous contribution to this year’s pageant and we feel that she is irreplaceable at this late stage. We will miss her on the evening,” Claudia said in a statement. Just a few days ago when Basetsana wrote on social media about how happy she was to be judging Miss SA. “It's been 22 years since I wore the crown and agreed to be a judge for Miss SA 2016. Thank you specifically to Wendy Futcher of Sun International for your relentless pursuit for almost 10 years for me to consider it,” she wrote on Facebook and Instagram.

“After the calibre of women I saw today, I am so inspired and delighted to be part of choosing our new Ambassador.”

The former Miss World runner-up said the Miss SA platform defined her destiny and opened doors for her.

“I hope it does the same for the winner, come Saturday the 19th March,” she wrote.

The organisers have wished Basetsana well and speedy recovery.

The remaining Miss SA judges are entrepreneur and former magazine editor Kojo Baffoe, actress Sophie Ndaba, designer Casper Bosman and magazine editor Pnina Fenster.

Miss SA takes place at Carnival City on Saturday and will be televised on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) and Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) from 5 pm to 7 pm.
