Palpitations cut short his UK tour but after specialised treatment the Bok should soon be as good as new

He strikes fear into the hearts of burly rugby players and when he picks up speed he’s like a rampaging bull. But even the toughest superhero has his Achilles’ heel – even one nicknamed Beast.

Rugby fans were shocked when Springbok loosehead prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira (27) was packed off home from Ireland recently.

The problem was related to his heart, which means he’ll miss the rest of the Boks tour in the UK.

Fortunately his fans, who habitually roar a drawn-out “Beeeeeast” from beside the field to egg him on, can heave a sigh of relief.

Because after a brief period of rest Zimbabwean-born Tendai is expected to be fit to return to the game in the new year.

Read more about Beast’s condition and the medical procedure used to treat it in Tom Raath’s article in YOU 29 November 2012.
