Beauty on the go for busy moms

Are you a busy mom rushing to get your children off to school? Then you’d probably like an everyday make-up routine that’s quicker and easier than saying, “Hello, gorgeous”! We tell you how to look fresh and pulled together in just five easy steps.

Step 1: Create a flawless complexion

After cleansing your face, start by creating an even-looking complexion. If you don’t need a lot of coverage, we recommend using a tinted moisturiser or, even better, a BB (blemish balm) or CC (colour-correcting) cream. You can use these first as a primer, followed by your foundation, or on their own.

BB creams are like lighter foundations and usually have a few skincare benefits thrown in, including moisturisers and sun protection. CC creams usually have a fluffy, light, whipped texture and finish, are aimed at colour correcting sallowness and redness, and usually contain light-reflecting particles for a radiant complexion.

To apply: Use a foundation brush for a flawless, even application or a sponge if you prefer. Start at the nose and blend from the centre of the face outward. Make sure foundation is blended well into the hairline to prevent streaks. You can apply your BB or CC cream all over your face and around the eye area.

Step 2: Apply concealer

Since you’ve already applied your BB or CC cream under your eyes, you’ll need less concealer, giving you a more natural finish. Using your ring finger, a brush or the applicator on your concealer, gently apply concealer, starting from the inner eye corners and working towards the outer corners underneath your eyes to hide any dark circles. Dab some onto any small blemishes you’d like to conceal too.

Step 3: Powder to perfection

Apply face powder with a small powder brush. A smaller brush works well for hard-to-reach places such as the edges of the nose or under eyes. For a dewy look, simply dust powder on your nose, across your chin, and over your cheeks and eyelids. (Concentrate on the T-panel, which tends to be oilier and more shiny.)

Top tip: Leave the tops of your cheekbones powder-free, even if you have oily skin; having a bit of shine here gives you a youthful, dewy look.

We like: Translucent powders such as Prime And Fine Translucent Loose Powder by Catrice or All About Matt! Fixing Compact Powder by Essence. It adds a matte finish without looking cakey.

Step 4: Make your eyes pop

For defined eyes that pop, use an eyeliner pencil to trace your upper lash line only, as close to the roots as possible. Use your finger or a cotton bud to smudge and soften. This gives your eyes the illusion of a thicker lash line. Now, it’s time for mascara. When you’re trying to get ready fast, all you need to do is accentuate your upper lashes with volumising mascara. The lower lashes are where smudging happens most, so keep them bare and you’ll save yourself potential clean-up time.

Step 5: Mwah!

Finish your look by swiping on a gorgeous lipstick, gloss or glaze. Since a bright or bold hue won’t compete with your subtly lined eyes, dare to go a bit wild with your pout.

We like: Lip Glaze by Stila, Pure Shine Colour Lip Balm by Catrice, Color & Care Liquid Lip Balm by Almay, XXXL Shine Lipgloss by Essence and Colorstay Ultimate Suede lipstick by Revlon.

If you’ve got an extra minute or two

Instantly brighten your face by highlighting it in three key places with a powder highlighter, such as Set & Illuminate Baked Powder Trio by Stila. Once you’ve applied your foundation and concealer, use an eyeshadow brush or cotton bud to sweep highlighter underneath your brow bone, trace the inner corners of your eyes and dust some highlighter over your cheekbones. This combination surrounds your eyes with radiance, making them shimmer – no eyeshadow needed!
