Preparation time: 5 min

Resting time: 30 min

Cooking time: 15 min

Serves: 4

500 ml (2 c) self-raising flour

a pinch of salt

45 ml (3 T) sugar

250 ml (1 c) light beer

5 ml (1 t) oil

3 sausages, sliced

500 ml (2 c) carrots, grated

1 of each yellow, green pepper and red, sliced

5 ml (1 t) dried chilli flakes

10 ml (2 t) paprika

salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 can (410 g) baked beans in tomato sauce

Mix together the flour, salt and sugar in a large mixing bowl.

Make a well in the middle and pour in the beer, mixing it into soft dough. Let it rest for 30 minutes.

On a floured surface shape the dough into flat rectangles.

Heat a griddle pan.

Place the dough on the pan once it’s hot, turning the rectangles a few times.

The dough is ready when a hollow sound can be heard when the rectangles are tapped.

Heat the oil in a panandcook the sausage slices for 2 minutes.

Add the carrots, peppers, chilli flakes and paprika.

Stir in the beans and serve the chakalaka with the bread.
