Better bread – Transform an ‘everyday’ favourite into something delicious

Three easy ways to enjoy bread other than just having a sandwich. Use bread in savoury and sweet treats for great taste and texture.

1. Bread pudding: 3 slices bread; 60 ml (¼ c) raisins; 60 ml (¼ c) sugar; 250 ml (1 c) milk and 2 eggs.

Place bread in a bowl and scatter raisins and sugar over. Whisk milk and eggs together, pour over bread and bake in the oven at 180 °C for 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Croutons

Any stale bread broken into chunks and placed on a baking tray. Sprinkle with olive oil, salt and pepper and grill until golden brown. Can be used in salads and over vegetables as a topping.

3. French toast: 250 ml (1 c) milk; 3 eggs; salt and pepper; bread

Whisk milk and eggs together, season with salt and pepper. Dip slices of bread into the mixture and fry in a pan with a little oil until brown on each side. Serve with maple syrup and bacon.
