South African viewers last saw a local edition of this entertaining series in 2002, but it’s getting ready to make its long-awaited return.

Under the microscope of Big Brother and millions of TV viewers a group of outgoing, but housebound, South Africans will again be watched with bated breath come January 2014.

M-Net has just announced its proudly local brand, Mzansi Magic, will produce another South African edition of Big Brother.

But this time, the show will be called Big Brother Mzansi.

The concept of reality television was introduced to South African audiences in 2001 with the first 24/7 Big Brother broadcasts in the southern hemisphere.

The show immediately grabbed the imagination of the nation, as well as frequent newspaper headlines. Academic theses and debates were even inspired.

Then after a second South African season in 2002 Big Brother ventured into the entire continent, where it continues to create waves of excitement and viewer participation season after season on Big Brother Africa.

Back to Big Brother Mzansi ? who will the presenter be? Who may enter? When will the contestants be chosen? What will the theme be? And, how much money is up for grabs?

With suspense mounting after this big announcement, we’ll just have to wait and see. As it stands, Endemol SA managing director Sivan Pillay says we can expect this country-specific Big Brother to be “filled with twists and turns, just like the Pan-African ones”. “More will be revealed at a later stage.”

Big Brother Mzansi will be the 11th season produced by companies M-Net and Endemol SA. This includes seasons of Big Brother South Africa as well as seasons of Big Brother Africa and Big Brother Nigeria.
