Book: Deborah Harkness - A Discovery of Witches

If Twilight’s Bella were a historian with a PhD and Edward a rich geneticist, they would have been the lead characters in this fantasy romance, the first in a trilogy.

The big difference is this “Bella” is a powerful witch from a long line of witches but she’s determined simply to be human.

Diana, an academic at Oxford University, opens an ancient alchemy book brimming with magic. This draws other magical creatures to Oxford, including vampire Matthew.

The chemistry between them is instant but witches and vampires aren’t allowed to be together and there’s the pesky issue of the other creatures wanting the book.

Diana is forced to deal with her witchy heritage as she and Matthew try to figure out her connection to the book.

It’s a fascinating story, bogged down by gooey love in the middle but it picks up again nicely towards the end.
