Book: Drive by James Sallis

The movie version of Drive was a stylish, moody affair, thanks in no small part to Ryan Gosling’s powerful performance.

It’s loosely based on James Sallis’ 2005 novel so it’s worth going back and reading the book, which has been re-released, because it adds more layers to the story.

The protagonist is possibly not as congenial on paper, but it’s top-notch noir as it follows the escapades of enigmatic Driver, a guy who does stunt driving for movies by day and drives for criminals at night.

There’s neat storytelling with the chronology of events twisted around to ensure things stay interesting. Some might take issue with the detached and impersonal tone of the book, yet despite its flaws Drive is a quick, enjoyable read with plenty of panache.
