The master of the popular legal drama goes straight for the jugular in his newest novel which sees a young black football star being sent to death row for raping and murdering a pretty white cheerleader.

Four days before Donte Drumm is due to be executed Travis Boyette, a hardened criminal on parole, walks into a pastor’s office and confesses to the crime.

He’s dying of a brain tumour and has nothing to lose. But he’s a nasty, manipulative character and it’s going to take a lot to convince authorities he’s in fact their man.

Grisham paints a poignant picture of Donte – a bright, enthusiastic and promising young athlete whose mental and physical decline after nine years on death row is nothing short of tragic.

And he presents a convincing case against the death penalty.

A pacy, entertaining holiday read.
