Book: Peter Godwin - The Fear: The Last Days of Robert Mugabe

Peter Godwin’s memoir starts with the promise of a new beginning: Robert Mugabe has lost the 2008 Zimbabwean election, signalling a new political era.

Yet when the exiled journalist returns home to “dance on Robert Mugabe’s political grave” his hopes are dashed.

The president refuses to cede power and has launched a violent campaign to punish those who “wrongly” voted for the opposition party, the MDC.

Godwin beautifully weaves together his personal journey through the country with stories of Zimbabweans who have experienced violence and torture.

The reader is spared none of the gory details – some of the survivors’ tales will make your stomach turn –but the book also celebrates the tenacity of Zimbabwean people.

The Fear is an excellent read. You don’t need to have read either of Godwin’s previous memoirs, Mukiwa and When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, to appreciate his latest offering.
