Book: Peter Mayle - The vintage caper

As light, fruity and fun as a summer rosé – that’sPeter Mayle’s newest novel which is a pleasing blend of crime and wine.

Traversing Los Angeles, Paris and Marseilles it tracks the disappearance of a $3-million wine collection from the private cellar of brash Hollywood entertainment lawyer Danny Roth.

Sam Levitt, corporate lawyer turned private detective, is hired to find the spectacular haul of vintage wine which, he suspects, has made its way back to France. With the assistance of the elegant Sophie Costes, Sam tours the major cellars in search of clues and meets one of France’s biggest – and richest – wine collectors.

As a crime novelist Mayle won’t threaten the livelihoods of Baldacci or Kellerman but what he lacks in plot and tension he more than makes up for in his mouth-watering descriptions of the gastronomic delights of his adopted country.

Reading him is like taking a tour of those tiny cafés and restaurants only locals know about. You’ll be booking your next holiday to France before you’ve read the final chapter.
