Book: Peter Temple - In The Evil Day

Finally available in SA this 2002 thriller is one of Temple’s best and most entertaining reads.

It focuses on South African Con Niemand, a former mercenary who stumbles upon a videotape of US soldiers committing atrocities; and John Anselm, an ex-journalist mentally damaged after being held hostage in Beirut, now a hi-tech industrial spy.

With an international cast of shady and very violent characters all hell-bent on getting their hands on the incriminating tape, Niemand finds himself on the run in Britain.

Meanwhile in Germany, Anselm starts to find links between information gathered for various clients, his own half-remembered past and Niemand’s tape.

Of special interest to local readers is the connection with SA’s shameful involvement in the Angolan Civil War.

As always Temple makes every word count in this action-packed, relentlessly fast-paced page-turner.
