You know it’s going to be a good read when you check the back cover and instead of boastful claims about the book and its author you find quotes about yourself. “You’re my favourite reader. Ever, of all time,” Ellen writes. “Shh . . . don’t tell the other readers.”

The book, which is a cross between an autobiography and self-help guide, consists of chapters in which the TV talk-show host discusses random things she’s learnt about life.

It contains advice such as “Be who you really are. Embrace who you are. Literally. Hug yourself. Accept who you are – unless you’re a serial killer.” It also includes anecdotes about her family and wife, Portia de Rossi.

Just about every chapter had me howling with laughter. For anyone who loves Ellen this book is an effortless and entertaining read. But if you find her irritating, steer clear of it.

Warning: it’s not a good idea to read this book in public – it will have you laughing so hard onlookers will think you’ve gone mad.
