BOOK: The Black Box - Michael Connelly

This is vintage Connelly.

Rated: 3/5 Michael Connelly’s iconic detective is no diplomat – far from it. Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch is a grumpy straight-talker who’s generally detested by the Los Angeles police top brass. But he has a nose for sniffing out the truth and an unparalleled professional code of ethics.

Bosch made his debut in 1992 in Connelly’s award-winning The Black Echo as a former LAPD homicide detective investigating murders for the Hollywood division. Now Bosch’s extended contract is nearly at an end, and his teen daughter is dreaming of following in his footsteps. Bosch feels the bite of time passing. It’s evident everywhere: in his admin – he still prefers a “murder book” instead of spreadsheets – in his present case, reopening one of his own murder cases from the LA riots 20 years ago; and in navigating the fragile emotions of a teenager.

This is vintage Connelly, where the fast pace of the unfolding story is offset by the limited, if awkward, peeks we have into Bosch’s private life.
