A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a 12-year-old boy over 33 times in Goodwood in Cape Town.

According to reports, the boy and his friends were playing soccer on Wednesday afternoon when the man – who has since been identified as Moain Salie – allegedly came to them and asked who the boy was. When they told him, he reportedly attacked the 12-year-old while his friends watched in shock.

Speaking to The Daily Voice, his mother Genevieve Whitaker (43) said she had no idea why Salie targeted her son.

"I would like to know why he did that. Why would you do that to a child?”

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said Salie was seen speaking to the victim before he attacked him and ran away. He was later identified by friends of the victim.

The 12-year-old reportedly sustained nine defensive wounds on one hand and seven on his other hand. According to Genevieve, doctors said that their main concern is that tendons in her child's hands have to be reconnected.

Speaking from a city hospital on Thursday, the mom said the operations had gone well.

"He is in recovery now. He has had two surgeries to repair damage to the left side of his head, shoulder and his hands,” Genevieve told The Daily Voice.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed the incident and said a 31-year-old man has been arrested.

“This office can confirm that a 31-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of attempted murder and robbery following an incident in Paarl Street, Goodwood, where a 12-year-old boy was stabbed and robbed of his cell phone on Wednesday around 1.30 pm.

“Police reacted to the incident and arrested the suspect in the vicinity.”

Salie has since been charged with attempted murder for the attack on the 12-year-old.
