A boy was arrested for allegedly killing two family members and injuring two others with an axe on Sunday in Lakeside, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

The boy allegedly hit his 60-year-old grandmother, 26-year-old aunt and two boy cousins, aged 17 and 18, with the axe, Captain Disebo Selepe said.

All four of them were allegedly hit in the head.

"His aunt died at the scene, while his grandmother died on the way to hospital," Selepe said.

The two cousins were taken to a nearby hospital and were in a critical condition.

The boy also allegedly attacked his six-year-old relative but she managed to escape unharmed, Selepe said.

The motive for the alleged attack and the boy's age was unknown at the time of his arrest.

He was expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court soon. –SAPA
