“I called everyone, cancelled, apologised, cried, called vendors, cried some more.”

Sharing her reception with over 100 homeless people – and no groom – was probably not quite what this young bride had in mind while planning the wedding of her dreams.

Sarah Cummings (25) was all set to walk down the aisle on 15 July, but instead, she found herself hosting held a dinner party for homeless people in Indiana, US – after calling off her wedding.

The bride-to-be was meant to have her reception at the lush Ritz Charles but cancelled all wedding plans to ex-fiancé Logan Araujo. She would not publicly give a reason as to why she called off her $30 000 (R390 000) wedding.

“It was really devastating,” an emotional Sarah told Indy Star.

But Sarah managed to turn her heartbreak into an act of kindness. After discovering her costly was non-refundable, she refused to let her elaborate food and decorations go to waste.

The grad student then phoned all homeless shelters in the area to see if anyone wanted to attend her cancelled wedding’s reception – and 170 down-on-their-luck folks were bussed in to the fancy dinner.

Logan, who paid for most of the wedding’s expenses, gave his wholehearted blessing for the act of kindness.

But the whole situation has left him gutted.

“I’m happy through my grief, and also Sarah’s, that she was able to make a selfless and very thoughtful decision in such a hard time,” says Logan.

Local businesses also pitched into the glamorous affair by donating suits and dresses to the lucky guests.

“I didn’t have a sports coat,” said delighted wedding guest, Charlie Allen. “I think I look pretty nice in it. For a lot of us, this is a good time to show us what we can have… Or to remind us what we had.”

The guests were served chicken breasts with artichokes and bourbon-glazed meatballs – not to mention a slice of delicious wedding cake for dessert!
