According to MailOnline, our brains mislead us to thinking that the spirals are different colours because of the Munker Illussion or the ‘whites effect’.

In simple words, we process colours based on what’s next to it. The contrast of the colours makes it difficult for our brains to see each colour individually.

This means that, rather than seeing the spirals in the illusion as the same colour shade, our eyes trick us into thinking that they are different.

Aimed at showing how your brain processes colour, the brain teaser was created by Psychology professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka from Japan who specialises in visual perception.
